Community FAQ

Questions by product

Mailgun FAQ

Can I self-host Mailgun or is it strictly a cloud service?

Mailgun is a fully managed cloud-based email delivery service and does not offer a self-hosted version. All email sending, deliverability monitoring, and validation features run on Mailgun's infrastructure, so you cannot deploy it on-premises or offline.

Community insight informed by Reddit discussions

Does Mailgun provide offline email sending capabilities or queueing if my app loses internet connection?

Mailgun requires an active internet connection to send emails via its API or SMTP. It does not provide offline queueing or local email sending features. You must implement your own local queueing mechanism if you want to handle intermittent connectivity before forwarding emails to Mailgun.

Community insight informed by Hacker News discussions

Who owns the email data and logs when using Mailgun? Can I export or delete all stored data?

Mailgun retains email sending logs and analytics data as part of their service. While you retain ownership of your email content, Mailgun stores metadata and logs on their servers. You can export logs via their API for a limited retention period and request data deletion per their privacy policy, but full raw data export is limited.

Community insight informed by StackOverflow discussions

Are there any API limitations or rate limits I should be aware of when using Mailgun for high-volume sending?

Mailgun enforces rate limits and API usage quotas depending on your plan. Free and lower-tier plans have stricter limits on the number of messages sent per month and API request rates. Higher-tier and enterprise plans offer increased limits and dedicated IPs to support high-volume sending. It's important to review your plan's limits to avoid throttling.

Community insight informed by Forums discussions

What is the recommended process to migrate from another email service to Mailgun without losing deliverability history?

Migrating to Mailgun involves updating your DNS records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) to authorize Mailgun sending, importing your contact lists, and gradually shifting sending volume to Mailgun. Deliverability history from your previous provider is not transferable, so you should monitor reputation closely and warm up your IPs if using dedicated IPs. Mailgun provides tools to monitor inbox placement to help during migration.

Postmark FAQ

Can I self-host Postmark or is it a fully managed service only?

Postmark is a fully managed email delivery service and does not offer a self-hosted version. All email sending, tracking, and analytics are handled through their cloud platform, so you cannot run Postmark on your own servers.

Community insight informed by Reddit discussions

Does Postmark offer offline email sending or queueing if my app loses internet connectivity?

Postmark itself does not provide offline functionality or local queueing. Your application is responsible for managing retries and offline queueing. Postmark’s API expects live HTTP requests to send emails and track events in real time.

Community insight informed by Hacker News discussions

Who owns the email data and tracking analytics collected by Postmark?

While you retain ownership of your email content and recipient data, Postmark processes and stores email metadata and tracking analytics on their servers. They have a strict privacy policy, but the data is hosted on their infrastructure, not locally controlled by you.

Community insight informed by Reddit discussions

Are there any notable limitations or rate limits on Postmark's API for sending transactional emails?

Postmark enforces API rate limits primarily based on your account plan, but these limits are generally high enough for most startups and small businesses. The API supports sending individual or batch transactional emails but does not support bulk marketing campaigns or seed-list testing.

Community insight informed by StackOverflow discussions

What options does Postmark provide for exporting email logs and analytics data for migration or backup?

Postmark allows exporting email activity and event data via their API, but there is no built-in bulk export tool for full data migration. You can programmatically retrieve logs and analytics to archive or migrate data, but it requires custom scripting.

SMTP2GO FAQ

Can SMTP2GO be self-hosted or is it strictly a SaaS solution?

SMTP2GO is a fully managed SaaS platform and does not offer a self-hosted version. Users rely on SMTP2GO's cloud infrastructure for email delivery, so there is no option to run the service on-premises or in a private cloud.

Community insight informed by Reddit discussions

Does SMTP2GO support offline email queuing in case of network interruptions?

SMTP2GO itself does not provide offline queuing functionality. Email clients or sending applications need to handle retries or queue emails locally when offline. SMTP2GO processes emails only when they are submitted over the network to their servers.

Community insight informed by StackOverflow discussions

What are the data ownership and privacy implications when using SMTP2GO?

Emails and related metadata sent through SMTP2GO remain the property of the sender. SMTP2GO processes and stores email data temporarily to facilitate delivery and analytics but adheres to strict privacy policies. Users should review SMTP2GO's data handling and retention policies to ensure compliance with their privacy requirements.

Community insight informed by Forums discussions

Are there any notable API limitations or rate limits with SMTP2GO's transactional email API?

SMTP2GO enforces rate limits based on the subscription plan tier, which can affect the maximum number of emails sent per minute or hour. The API supports standard SMTP and REST endpoints but may lack some advanced features found in larger incumbents. Detailed rate limits and API capabilities are documented per plan and should be reviewed before integration.

Community insight informed by Hacker News discussions

What is the migration process like when moving from Amazon SES or other SMTP providers to SMTP2GO?

Migrating to SMTP2GO typically involves updating SMTP credentials or API keys in your existing email sending infrastructure. While SMTP2GO supports standard SMTP protocols, some workflow or feature differences may require adjustments. Exporting historical email data is not supported, so analytics and logs remain with the original provider. Planning for DNS record updates (SPF, DKIM) is also necessary.
